Small Boulder TechBootstrap Logo

At the last Boulder OpenCoffee Club meeting, Patti Miller suggested an idea that would enable the Boulder tech start-up/bootstrap community to share resources online. We’ve been working on it steadily since then and will be launching the site as a Wiki+Forum at this morning’s meeting.

Top Ten Twitter Toys

Saturday, January 19th, 2008

I’ve been a Twitter user since April or May last year. It’s a neat way of communicating with people in a “stream of consciousness” way.

Twitter released an API that allows people to create applications that improve upon (and sometimes not) the service users receive. Below are my top ten favorite twitter toys.

  1. Twitter Karma by @dossy — a really cool follow/followed dashboard
  2. Tiny Twitter by @kcbigring — A mobile twitter client
  3. Twitter Stats by @dacort — twitter statistics script (see my statistics below)
  4. Snook’s Twitter (snitter) by @snitter — An Adobe AIR-based twitter client
  5. Twittervision by @davetroy — Google Maps + Twitter live mashup
  6. Tweeterboard by @tweeterboard — a twitter conversation analytics site
  7. Tweet Scan by @weex — simple Twitter search engine
  8. Twitterverse by @emilychang and @maxkiesler — Tag cloud representation of the Twitter public timeline
  9. Twitterholic by @tw_tterholic — Leader board representation of the Twitter public timeline
  10. Jott — not an "official" twitter service, but this free voice-to-text service integrates with Twitter

Edited to add: Yes I am aware of Hashtags. No, I’m not convinced of their utility over just searching on the public timeline on keywords.

Voice Blogging?

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

This seems to be a solution to the problem of not being near a computer to post something really important to your blog — right now.

Yahoo, Google and several others have connected IVRS (Interactive Voice Response Services) proxies to Live Journal and other Blogging systems for years. It’s a really neat trick and provides an extra interface into “The Conversation”.

I just can’t get over feeling like I’m listening to someone else’s voice mail.

Startup Weekend is this weekend.

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

When I heard that Andrew Hyde had come up with the fun and crazy (a good crazy) idea for Startup Weekend I immediately knew it was genius — and Boulder’s tech/entrepreneur community has signed up with its full support.

Andrew’s plan is to take 50-60 techs, hackers, designers, programmers, user experience folk, lawyers, venture capitalists, jacks of all trade and cooks and lock them in a room together for a weekend with an idea. By marinating everyone’s brains together from Friday at 6pm until Sunday night at 10pm, the goal is to have a company with a product and strategy by the end.

Boulder has a really active community of tech entrepreneurs. Boulder’s OpenCoffee is amongst the largest OpenCoffees around the world. The Boulder Denver New Tech Meetup group has almost 500 members. There’s also the Boulder BarCamp, which has happened twice. Combine all of the people with a bunch of smart startups and a few venture capital firms and the result is pretty cool.

It feels a lot like what my friends had in the Bay Area in the early-mid ’90s and we didn’t have in Toronto, where I started my first couple of Internet companies. I’m energized by everyone around me and I’m thankful to be a part of this community. See you at Startup Weekend.
